A Designer’s Passion
Robert Zur got his first job in the industry over four decades ago at Endicott Johnson, a New York-based shoe manufacturer where his grandparents worked various labor-intensive positions. He was hired straight out of college and was asked to learn the business by starting in the accounting department. As he slowly studied the processes and functions of the company, Zur realized his true passion was in shoe design.
After a short while, Zur decided to follow his heart and chase his dream of becoming a shoe designer. He moved his wife and two children to Maine and began working for several quality shoe manufacturers in the area, learning the ins-and-outs of the craft. Zur’s big break came in 1978, when US Shoe offered him a design job in Florence, Italy. His expertise grew rapidly while studying the revolving fashion trends of the European shoe market.
In 1990, Robert Zur truly began to make a name for himself. He worked for the late, great designer David Evans in New York City, as well as Cole Haan over the course of 11 years as a women’s shoes designer. Finally, he launched his own company in 2001 with a line of Italian-made heels under the Robert Zur name.
